Do you hear about Structured data or Microdata? If not then I strongly recommend you to go through about Structured data or Microdata tutorial and then immediately come back to Data Highlighter tutorial.
As the name suggest Data Highlighter is a Google webmaster tool tell google about the structured data pattern in your site. You can tag the data fields on your site with a mouse very easily. This help Google to understand about your data and site very well.
You might be thinking why this is required, the answer is simple that Google Search engine is a software program which does not know how accurate your site is and which type of audience are you targeting, how frequently you are updating page and much more.
To identify all these areas there is a concept called microdata or structured data used by every search engines.
Supported data types
Broadly data highlighter can be used to teach google about following type of data:
· Local Businesses
· Software Applications
· TV Episodes
This is not limited to what you can think of, you have the option to do much more than the available types.
Creating first data highlighter page –
To create your first data highlighter page you have to log into your webmaster account to which your website is added as a property. Read how to add website property to webmaster account.
Click on the property to which you need process google highlighter pages
Now navigate to Search Appearance –> Data Highlighter from left menu
And click on Start Highlighting, this will open the dialog asking for website page value, Type of information on the Website Page and Option to auto select other pages having the same format to create highlighter without rework.
Now fill all the relevant information
I have provided URL of one of my post/page and have selected category as Article, I also want to light pages having a similar layout, therefore, I am selecting “Tag this page and other like this”.
Click on ok and you will see the screen having horizontal bar on top showing four steps
- Tag First Page
- Create Page Set
- Tag More Examples
- Review and Publish
We will start with tagging first page – Tag First Page
Now I believe you can see the page as shown below, definitely of your website. The idea is to tag microdata information on the web page. For this, you have to select the content of site using the mouse as I have shown and right click. This ill open menu to choose the relevant category for the selected text. Here is I have selected title of my post. See the rightmost title value now, this indicates that the information used in this place of my page is a post title.
Similarly, you have to select each value one by one like Author, Date Published, Image, Category etc.
Note – Leave the value which is not relevant or is not available on your web page.
Click on Done once you are ready with the data selection as shown below.
This will navigate you to the page set screen from where you can select a similar type of pages to be highlighted. The default feature intelligently selects the pages for you, but you can also create your custom page set.
Once done click on Create Page set.
This will navigate you to the “Tag More Examples”, in this section you can review the tagged pages and can fix them for any mistakes. Click on next and verify the page tagging one by one, one the review is done you can simply Review and Publish the pages.
That’s all you have to do the use google highlighting feature.
Drawbacks of Google Highlighting
The feature is good unless you do not decide to change the code and template of the website, but you change the page template then you have to remove the highlighted word and need to create new again.
Do you know I am not using this feature? The reason is that I have purchased the Premium microdata enabled theme. Yes, did you tried to see the view source of any microdata enabled web page? If not do it now, you can search for string “itemprop”. Can you find it?
Itemprop is the key having values of properties honored by search engines that helps to rank the page in a better way. The same thing you are doing using google highlighter.
So you can decide and move your site to any one-time payment premium WordPress theme. I am using Genesis Parallax Pro Theme from StudioPress.
