I think you are confused with the title of the blog. Are you? I am talking about approving blog comments, at the same time I am talking about if you should really allow blog comments on your blog?
It’s important to understand various aspects of blog comments before you make a decision and load your site with dozen plugins to manage your comments.
I was really frustrated with comments and at one moment and decided to turn it off for some obvious reasons while I was on Vacation, but then I turned them ON while I was back.
Why should you NOT allow blog comments on Your Blog?
I personally shut that down ( blog comments on blogduster.com) for the following reasons.
I was spending More Time on Blogs
Blog Comments Moderation takes Time & that is a hard truth. You simply can’t just approve comments randomly. You will find different types of blog comments that just don’t make any sense.
Some blog commentator engages in futile conversations with other bloggers over trivial details of certain blog sections.I was spending a lot of time filtering these comments.
So effectively I was just spending more time than usual on my blog.
I deviated from my Goal
Something that depends on person to person. Some people can’t just ignore the voice and get carried away. You can be influenced by blog comments and can start writing for commentators rather your readers and could deviate you writing for your audience.
Another important thing was that I started blogging to get rid of my usual corporate routine of spending 10 hours in front of computers daily and wanted to spend my life doing other things which I personally feel are important in life like mountaineering , visiting favorite beaches, misty mountains.
I was just not able to ignore the commentators and spending a huge amount of time , moderating blog comments, a definite deviation from my life goals which I had set it for myself.
Some People were Using Comments for Publicity
That’s another thing, which new blogger use your blog comments space for. Yes, around 50% of the commentators are new bloggers, who use it as a way to publicize themselves and use the blog comments to leave hyperlinks of their website, which I don’t think anyone in this world would ever click.Don’t think that is a good way to promote your blog.
Don’t think that is a good way to promote your blog. I would rather suggest them to start their own blog and do some serious research on the subject.
Moderating Random Comments by Confused Pundits
Some of the confused one’s simply visit the site, look some headings, images and they assume the content without even reading the content.
I don’t think their comments would add any value to your blog. Because they are really confused just because they had a long boring day in their life with no goals or probably they are more than satisfied and not serious about anything.
But then, What you Miss?
The Genuine Commentators Obviously !! or people who really care about your content. Yes, this percentage is really low, maybe around 20-25%. But then this high potential population which has the capability for research and creating their own blogs.
It’s important to connect to such people , but you would definitely be able to comment via your contact forms or they generally subscribe to your newsletters if they are serious.
I think my decision to shut blog comments was not Correct and eventually I decided to turn them ON.
Why Must you allow blog comments on Your Blog?
One of the biggest downsides of turning off blog comments that I feel is no reader interaction. Blog comments act just like a health supplement and your site will lose its health.
Building blog community is very important for the growth of your site. You never know if the blog commentator could be your next business partner or a potential guest blogger. Some of the blog comments generate fantastic ideas and reviews.
Yes!! Now that’s really interesting. Blog comments are one of the parameters which add SEO value to your blog post. The more the comments on your page, the more value it adds. Each and every reply you post is also counted as new comments
Note: Don’t use any of the manipulative tricks to increase comments on your blog.Google is smart enough to figure this out.
So it is in your best interest to approve blog comments, but then it is equally important to understand,
What Kind of Blog Comments You Should Approve?
Comments from Deep Thinkers or Real People
Yes, these are people who really care about your content. They read the full content and provide an honest feedback or could share their opinion. It could even be in the form of a question like
“Hi DJ, I was wondering if you have any idea, how to install Akismet Plugin for FREE?”
Spam Comments – Never
That’s a real pain, really. This is something that we deal with frustration in our minds. I really don’t understand, that why people spend so much time building bot’s that can leave spam on other’s comments. They can use that time and energy to promote their blogs.
The frustration for SPAM comments is at such a level that as soon as people see a Hyperlink in a comment, it is considered to be a SPAM or it’s better to mark it as a SPAM.
More than 50% of comments I receive are SPAM. Here is how a SPAM comment looks like !!
You can see those obvious links.
The best way to identify SPAM comments is by the Author Name. Just look at the example above & the name of the author contains words like “Email”,”Commission”,”Miles”. Definitely, the do not look like real names. Links attached to these comments make it more obvious.
Those comments are left by bots ( computer programs) to get a backlink since some websites do provide do-follow backlinks on their comments.
Blocking Spam Comments Using Akismet
It’s important to block spam comments. You could choose to do this manually. I did this for quite some long time, but not after I heard of Akismet.
Akismet is considered to be the best Plugin to block SPAM Comments especially if you are using WordPress. It has a Rating of 5 Stars and has more than 1 Million Downloads.
